Tyler Browne wins Bill Talbert Sportsmanship Award!

Tyler Browne of Walnut Creek is one of four recipients of the Bill Talbert Sportsmanship Award. The selection process involves all of the United States Tennis Association's seventeen sections. The prestigious honor recognizes the outstanding sportsmanship displayed in tournament competition.

Tyler's Sportsmanship resume speaks to his character as a competitor. He was awarded the Sportsmanship Award for the 1997 Pacific USTA Zone Team Championships in the Boys 12s. He also won the Northern California Sportsmanship Award in 1996 and 1997 for the Boys 12s.

Tyler is currently coached by Jeff Southwick of Orinda.  Jeff had the following to say about Tyler.

I've known Tyler and taught him since he was six years old. I have had the privilege to see him grow as a player and a person. I can remember a time in his life when he enjoyed cheeseburgers more than tennis. Then came the knee injury that side lined him from competitive play until his second year in the 16s. 2003 finds Tyler fighting for the number one spot in NorCal. All along he has been a pleasure to be around and especially to coach. He does everything asked of him and then some, and always with a smile on his face. I believe Tyler embodies everything this award stands for and would represent it well both Nationally and here in NorCal.

Sincerely,

Jeff Southwick

Christopher Rasmussen and Michael Ricks, both competitors and peers of Tyler had the following to say:

Tyler and I have known each other for 5  years. We met when we played against each other at the Carmel Super Series when we were twelve years old. Ever since then, we have become good friends and we practice tennis together once a week. He is a gracious winner and always has a smile on his face even when he loses a match. Tyler is a very fair line caller and competitor. I have lots of fun being his doubles partner. He encourages me on the court and never gets upset at me when I make silly mistakes. After years of playing in tournaments, I can count on one hand, those players who remain honest and truthful at 5 all in the third set. Tyler is certainly one of those few people, and it is because of that, I recommend him highly for this award.

Sincerely yours,

Christopher Rasmussen

I've known Tyler for a very long time. He has always been very pleasant, honest and fair on and off the court. As his doubles partner and his opponent, he is always friendly. His manner is only second to his mother's cooking! In vicotry and defeat, he is always a gentleman. Tyler is well deserved to be the recipient of this award.

Sincerely yours,

Michael Ricks
